Stop ALEC!

By Socialist Party of Texas

Don’t Mess with Texas,

STOP ALEC AND DEFEND OUR DEMOCRACY

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is coming to Dallas from July 30th to August 1st. ALEC wines and dines state politicians and corporate lobbyists behind closed doors where they work together to rewrite our laws without any public input. It’s time we send a message to these out-of-touch politicians that they are supposed to work for us, not out-of-state companies.

These industry-backed laws help bankrupt our schools, make it more difficult to vote and expand tax cuts for the rich, just to name a few. The laws are written by lobbyists, passed often without any changes made and benefit corporations at the expense of you and me. This takes control of our state capitol away from us and circumvents the democratic process.

Let’s send a message to ALEC that we will not let Texas be assaulted!

In the last section of the conference, the group decided to add their actions and voices to the annual ALEC Meeting being held at the Anatole Hotel in Dallas on July 30th, 31st and Aug 1st. The planning committee, which includes about 30 progressive activist groups, from the AFL-CIO, Color of Change and Jobs with Justice, have settled on several activities on July 30th as indicated here:

Wednesday, July 30 – 11:00 am to 4:00/5:00 pm – Meet at the Community Brewery in Dallas, 1503 Inspiration Drive, Dallas, 75207
• Travel by bus to the Hilton Anatole, 2201 N Stemmons Fwy, Dallas, 75207
• Rally and Press Conference
• Press Conference would include national press figures
• 1:00 pm – return to the Community Brewery by bus for panels, Bill Moyer’s movie, The United States of ALEC, http://billmoyers.com/episode/preview-the-united-states-of-alec/, other strategizing
• That evening – IF we find out where ALEC is holding its offsite dinner – we plan another protest outside that venue
To date, there are no concrete plans for the other two days. Several groups: Texas MoveOn.org, Code Pink and Progressive Democrats for America are presently working on fleshing out activities for July 31st and August 1st. Members of this group have been meeting telephonically every Thursday morning discussing possible actions. If you would like to join the group on Thursday mornings, please reply to this email and I will send you the contact information.
Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the strong progressive voices against ALEC and Corporate Welfare, is pushing this action as well.
