“The movement rises up when the pressure comes down,” is one of the many saying of Modjeska Simkins to be found in a new booklet on her life published by the South Carolina Progressive Network. Modjeska was born in Jim Crow’s early days in 1899 in Columbia South Carolina and passed away, after an extraordinary life, at 92 years of age.
