Confronting Student Debt

By Theresa Alt
Ian Schachner tells Deirdre Silverman how the prospect of student debt discourages talented students from even applying to college. Students in college are fearful about their debts, afraid to speak up lest future employers object to their opinions, constrained to limit themselves to vocationally-useful courses. After graduation, the need to repay debt forces them into long working hours at jobs they would never have chosen. Obama granted some relief with an executive order; he could issue a wider-reaching order limiting the amount young adults are required to pay back. Ultimately the solution is federally-funded higher education. Recorded October 30, 2013.
